1.2. Online Safety Activities
Keeping young learners safe online is a big responsibility. For this task, you will explore multimedia resources created to engage students and teach them how to protect themselves online. Then you will create a warm-up or follow-up activity for 1 of these resources.
Follow these instructions:
1st View these resources:
- Brain Pop Jr. Internet Safety - a short animated video that could be used as a discussion starter about cyber-safety.
- Common Sense with Phineas and Ferb - another short video about cyber-safety.
- Generation Safe - Have access to an entire curriculum for teaching cyber-safety and digital literacy.
The following are online safety games for learners:
- Webonauts Academy - As new recruits to the Webonauts Internet Academy‚ on a satellite space station‚ players are sent on a training mission on planet Bambu. While there‚ they encounter a mysterious enemy‚ The Great Static‚ who is set on stealing the Bamdudes’ cookie recipe (they are the best cookie makers in the Universe). During the course of the game‚ players receive on-the-job training and help the Bamdudes and save their cookie recipe!
- Netsmartz Kids - Various adventure games to teach Internet safety
- Safety Land - As Captain Broadband you must rid the town of a villain who is spamming people with messages. Seek out the villain, answer quiz questions, and earn points.
2nd Create a warm-up or follow-up activity to accompany at least 1 of the internet safety videos or 1 of the online safety games.
3rd Click Add Submission and upload a text file which includes at least the following fields:
- Explain if it is a game or video.
- Choose which site you found the video or game.
- Include the URL of the resource.
- Include a warm-up or follow-up activity for 1 of the resources. Your follow-up activity should follow this format:
- Activity Description: In 1 or 2 sentences, briefly describe your warm-up or follow-up activity.
- Activity Details: Describe the steps and stages for the activity. Do this using bullet points. Include links to any online tools, materials, examples or resources.
- Web Tool, Materials, Resources Used for this Activity: List any websites, webtools, apps, hand-outs, or resources the students will need to complete the activity. Include links for each item listed.
- Example: Post a URL, upload a file, or include a screenshot that shows what this task looks like.
4th. Do not forget to tweet your activity. Use the course hashtag, #storytelling_INTEF.
Click below on the Add Submission button and upload your file, then click Save and View so that your contribution is recorded. Once registered, you can modify at any time by clicking on Edit my submission, until you send it for grading by clicking on Submit assignment.
