Comics in the Classroom

Teachers have been integrating comics in various ways to improve literacy, teach vocabulary, to broach tough subjects and to get their learners to contextualize what they read. Below are a few examples to explore:

Example 1 with Adults

Jennifer Verschoor, a teacher trainer in Argentina, had participants create comic stories about their experiences and feelings in the course. View the collected comics in this Photo Peach slideshow.

Example 2 with Kids

Barbara Sakamoto, an author and children’s teacher in Japan, uses comics with young English language learners. She will show her students a comic that acts as a story prompt. Students then create stories inspired by the comic. They take the prompt further and flesh it out. Her students also record narration for their stories so they get speaking practice as well.
