Longer Writing Projects with Comics

When students create comic strips, they are practicing writing short texts. However, teachers can have their learners write longer stories by using comic creators like Marvel’s Create a Comic book and ComicMaster. Comic Master walks students through the process of creating a graphic novel. Another idea is to have the class create a collaborative comic book. The teacher would pair students and assign each pair a section of the comic book. The teacher provides the theme, the cast of characters, and gives each pair of students their plot. This activity could be used to visualize a historical event like the 1920s or retell a story like Little Red Riding Hood. Use a tool like Google Docs to have learners upload their strips and piece the story together.
