Create a Silent Film

Mission 5 This is our last 3-day weekly mission. Ready?

One type of film we can create on our mobile devices that requires no Internet connection is a silent film. In a silent film, the audience does not hear what happens or what the characters are saying. Instead, each scene will consist of actors miming the action. The next scene shows the audience a few words displayed that express an emotion or reaction.

For this task you will create a 1 to 2 minute silent film using a mobile device. Follow these instructions:

1st In the article, Making a Silent Film, discover how a teacher helped his learners create a silent film with an iPad. Watch the student films that are in the article to get ideas for your silent film.

2nd Create your 1 to 2 minute silent film using a mobile device. You may use video editing apps to create your film. If you cannot download apps, then create text scenes by filming posters or paper with the written text. The following video editing apps will help you create a silent film quickly.

IOS free video apps:

Android free video apps:

3rd Upload your silent film to Vimeo or Youtube so that you can embed it in this forum.

4th When your silent film is completed, please submit your film by following these instructions:

  • Click the button below labeled Add a new discussion topic.
  • In the Subject, include your first and last name's Silent Film: Title. For example, Jane Doe would write in the Subject line Jane Doe's Silent Film: Running Late to Work
  • In the Message, include:
    • your reflections about what you think students learn from the process of creating and watching silent films versus creating a film with the audio dialogue.
    • The link to your silent film.
    • Click Post to Forum so that your story is recorded. Check to see that your submission posted to the forum.

5th Comment on your peers' silent films.

6th. Tweet your silent film if you like. Use the course hashtag, #storytelling_INTEF.

This is a voluntary mission, but we invite you to accomplish it. This type of missions help you explore the topic more and give you the opportunity to receive extra feedback from your instructor and peers. Have a look at the silent films by peers at former editions: March 2014, October 2014.
